We may have walked a week later than some, but the enthusiasm to support this great charity was still there! All in the school took part, walking with members of their houses – Brownsea, Corfe, Lulworth or Studland – with the youngest helping the eldest. About £500 was raised. Thank you to you all.

Daedalus and Icarus
Four very talented budding classicists from Years 5 and 6 had a wonderful evening out at Canford School, as finalists in the annual Canford Classics essay writing competition. They were treated to a the world premiere of a stunningly original cantata on the story of ‘Daedalus and Icarus’, followed by dinner and a highly entertaining lecture on mythological beasts from Mr Maurice Walters, Head of Classical Civilisation at Canford. This all served as the entrée ahead of the main event, in which prizes were awarded for the best essays in the competition. Jemima scooped the prize for the best essay about mythological beasts in her age group: the judges particularly liked her imaginative approach in pitting various beasts and monsters against each other to ascertain their strengths and weaknesses, thereby determining an overall winner. Jemima was rightly very pleased to win this prize, confirming the strength and depth of classical interest in the school. As Mr Walters commented: the study of classics is thriving, and the legacy of that world is safe in the hands of pupils like these.

Maths challenge
Castle Court attended the St Swithun’s Maths Challenge on 20th March, and so joined in with over 130 children from 20 prep schools from across the south of England and London. The four mathematicians from Castle Court, Frances Fleming, Emma Jeffries, Alex Knox-Jones and Henry Nix faced a series of maths quizzes and challenges including the following:
“The average person flushes a toilet 2500 times a year. An old toilet uses 9 litres per flush where as a new toilet uses only 6 litres per flush. How much water will a family of 4 save in a year, if they install a new toilet?”
The team were very unlucky not to come in the top three, and vowed to return next year to pit their wits against other young mathematicians from across the region.
Found amongst the veggies…..
The children’s vegetable patch, Greenfingers, has just been dug over and is now ready to have the first crops of the season sown. However, the pottery club have got in there first! Waiting to hide amongst the veggies as they grow this spring is a rabbit, a fox, a dragon and more.
Next time you are on site please do go and have a look at them. The pottery work is fabulous.

Not all the scholarship results are in yet, but already children have done superbly. Congratulations.
