Rugby has been very popular with the boys in recent years and the school is lucky to have two RFU Level 1 coaches on the staff, together with a number of other experienced teachers. September sees the start of pre-season training for boys in years 6-8 who are interested in making the Colts XII and 1st XV, through popular after-school activity sessions. Rugby takes over from football at around half term with the aim of getting as many pupils enjoying and participating in the game as possible.
We aim to put out a 1st XV, 2nd XIII or XII, Colts XII and Junior Colts IX on most match days (following the RFU Continuum) to allow those who have taken to the game the opportunity to play at a suitable level. We also seek to arrange matches for Colts ‘B’ and Junior Colts ‘B’ whenever we can, so that nearly every boy can play for the school. In the 2009-10 season, we are extending the number of Year 4 (U9) fixtures to take in full contact rugby as well as giving members of year 3 (U8) their first opportunity to play the game and the chance to represent the school in the exciting TAG version of the game.
The school also enjoys excellent relations with Bath Rugby, acting as one of their community partners in bringing the Bath Rugby Academy to the area every year. Bath Rugby Community Coaches have also helped out with delivering TAG rugby at various levels in the school, which culminated last year in a mixed U10 team from Castle Court representing Bath Rugby in a match at Twickenham in front of more than 40,000 people. We look forward to seeing how this exciting relationship develops in the coming years.
All pupils in Year 3-8 are expected to have their own gumshield (both for use in rugby and in hockey) and parents are asked to take initial responsibility for changing studs over to Kite-Marked rugby studs.
