Castle Court’s Classics Department continues to inspire. Two Year 6 pupils from Castle Court had a very special evening out at Canford School recently, after their entries for a Classical Essay Competition were highly commended leading them to be invited to the finalists’ evening. Jessica Mitchell did very well to produce her own mythological story on the theme of ‘The Dark Queen and the Path of Fire’ and should be rightly pleased for being shortlisted as a finalist. However, Michael Maiden’s essay on the character of Achilles from the Trojan War went one step better by winning first prize in that particular category. This was a very fine achievement, especially when you consider that he was up against 120 other entrants from across the region. Both pupils were treated to an entertaining talk on Greek mythology from Mr Maurice Waters – Head of Classical Civilisation at Canford School. This was followed by dinner and the chance to see the Canford Senior production of Sophocles’ Antigone – an engaging reworking of one of the most compelling tragedies from the Greek world. It was a pleasure to see 2 Old Castellans on the stage and for our pupils to meet them after the performance: a real inspiration for the future.
